When will LEGO® Rivendell retire? 2026 or 2028

LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell

The LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell (10316) has been “retiring soon” in fan reports for almost two years, and its expected date has moved three times. If you are trying to decide whether to buy it now or wait, here is what each source says as of 23 October 2026, and how much weight each one deserves.

The short answer

  • Most likely the end of 2028. Brick Fanatics reported on 7 September 2026 that LEGO extended Rivendell to the end of 2028.
  • Brickset still lists 31 December 2026, so the two main fan sources disagree.
  • LEGO.com shows no “Retiring soon” label. On 23 October 2026 it listed Rivendell on backorder, shipping in 60 days.
  • LEGO itself never publishes retirement dates, so every date here is an expectation, not an announcement.

When will LEGO retire Rivendell?

Rivendell launched on 5 March 2023 at $499.99 in the US. Its expected retirement has moved like this, according to Brick Fanatics’ reporting:

  • Originally the end of 2025.
  • November 2024: moved to “at least the end of 2026”.
  • February 2026: Brick Fanatics listed it among Icons sets retiring by 31 December 2027.
  • 7 September 2026: Brick Fanatics reported that LEGO had “extended their shelf lives all the way through until the end of 2028”, for both Rivendell and Barad-dûr (10333).

Brickset, the fan database most shops and collectors check first, still showed an exit date of 31 December 2026 when we looked on 23 October 2026. The two sources disagree, and the newest report is Brick Fanatics’ September one.

Note: The strongest sign that a set is about to go is LEGO.com’s own “Retiring soon” label. LEGO adds it to sets that “will be officially retired very soon”. With ten weeks left in 2026, Rivendell does not carry it, which fits the 2028 date better than the 2026 one.

Why Rivendell is on backorder at LEGO.com

On 23 October 2026 LEGO.com US listed Rivendell at $499.99 with the status “Backorder” and “Will ship in 60 days”, with a limit of two per household. A backorder means LEGO is out of stock for now and is taking orders to ship when new stock arrives. It is not the same as retiring: LEGO marks the sets it is about to retire “Retiring soon”, and Rivendell has no such label.

What you get in LEGO Rivendell (10316)

  • 6,167 pieces, for builders aged 18 and up.
  • 15 minifigures, including the whole Fellowship of the Ring: Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf the Grey, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir. Brickset counts 21 because the set also has six Elven statue figures.
  • Three sections that display separately: the tower, the council ring and the gazebo with the river and bridge. The Council of Elrond lifts off the main model.
  • Interior details such as Frodo’s bedroom, Elrond’s study and the forge.
  • Over 15 in. (39 cm) high, 28.5 in. (72 cm) wide and 19.5 in. (50 cm) deep, by LEGO’s measurements. Plan for a wide shelf or table rather than a tall one.

Should you buy Rivendell before it retires?

If you want Rivendell to build or display, the date matters less than availability: LEGO.com is currently backordered by about two months. If you are thinking of it as an investment, be careful. Retirement does not guarantee a set will go up in value, and if Rivendell stays on sale until the end of 2028 it will have been sold for almost six years.
